Mathematicians doing stand up comedy. You've probably seen this one in many meme pages. This was an easy one and I am glad it got viral.

Universal Computation

The final infinity stone for quantum power.

Clifford gates alone aren't enough for universal quantum computation. You need to add a non-Clifford resource, often prepared via a "magic state," to unlock full computing power.

Lost in Translation

Two different kinds of "Matrix" fans.

A play on the double meaning of "matrix": the man is thinking of the movie, while the woman is thinking of a mathematical matrix element in quantum mechanics.

No-Cloning Theorem

Why quantum states prefer cut & paste.

You can't copy an unknown quantum state (Ctrl+C). Quantum teleportation moves a state by destroying the original, which is analogous to cutting and pasting (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+V).

Identity Crisis

This quantum circuit does... absolutely nothing.

This circuit first entangles two qubits and then immediately applies the inverse operation, returning the qubits to their initial state with no net effect.

Relativistic Dating

When red flags turn green... at 0.235c.

A pun on the relativistic Doppler effect. Light from an object moving toward you is blueshifted, so if you run fast enough, "red flags" could theoretically appear blue (or green).

Group Theory Problems

Some subgroups just can't be normal.

A niche joke from abstract algebra. The S₃ group is yelling at one of its subgroups which famously lacks the mathematical property of being "normal."

The Quantum Choice

Choose your pill: Locality or Realism.

Bell's Theorem proves you can't have both locality (no spooky action) and realism (definite properties) in the classical sense. One must be abandoned.

A Higher Plane

A mathematician's point of view.

Using stereographic projection, the mathematician is at the North Pole, the only point not mapped to the "plane of stupidity" where everyone else resides.

A Victim of Success

This qubit is too well-isolated.

A real engineering trade-off. Making a qubit highly resilient to noise (a success) also makes it harder to measure and control (a new problem).

Ground State Urge

When you're feeling low, apply â.

Dark humor about the annihilation operator (â). When it acts on the ground state |g⟩, the lowest energy state, the result is zero.

One Ring to Rule Them All

An algebraist finds the One Ring.

A pun from abstract algebra. A "ring" is a set with two operations, like the integers (Z, +, .). To a mathematician, that's the inscription on the ring, but to Frodo, it's "just a ring."

Civil War

A classic math vs. physics debate.

Mathematicians define the inner product to be linear in the first slot, while physicists using Dirac notation define it to be linear in the second slot. This leads to minor "wars" over convention.

A Hard Truth

Quantum error correction is subtle.

Pauli operators form a vector space, not an algebra. A quantum error correcting code that can fix X and Z errors is not guaranteed to fix combined Y=iXZ errors, a counter-intuitive but crucial fact.

A Function or Not?

To the boiler room of hell!

The Dirac Delta isn't a true function; it's a "distribution." Calling it a function is a common physicist shortcut that annoys mathematicians, who might consider it a sin worthy of hell.

Statistical Subtlety

We don't "accept" the null hypothesis.

In statistics, failing to reject the null hypothesis doesn't mean you've proven it's true. It simply means you lack sufficient evidence to say it's false.

What is "+" ?

The answer depends on your axioms.

This "1+1" question is tricky because the definition of "+" isn't given. The answer is 10 in binary, 0 in mod 2 arithmetic, 1 with a boolean OR operation, and 11 via string concatenation.

Nowhere Differentiable

Not all continuous functions are smooth.

The Weierstrass function is a famous example of a function that is continuous everywhere but has no derivative at any point, lurking to horrify unsuspecting math students.

The Power of Holomorphy

Real vs. Complex analysis.

For complex functions, being differentiable just once implies the function is infinitely differentiable and perfectly smooth (analytic). Real functions are far less well-behaved.
